District 214 Community Education tutors honored
The Illinois Secretary of State office recently honored District 214 Community Education Read to Learn tutors Stuart Harris and Eugene Swedo with the 2013 Spotlight on Service Award, which recognizes outstanding volunteer tutors in Illinois literacy programs.
Stuart Harris began tutoring for Read to Learn Adult Literacy/Volunteer program in January of 1998. He has tutored more than 1,600 hours, which makes him a Gold Club of Honor member in the program.
Harris goes above and beyond what is expected of a volunteer tutor. He seeks to establish a partnership with his adult learners, often meeting them outside of class time.
He shares his knowledge and experience at the Rolling Meadows High School site Thursday evenings and at the Mount Prospect Public Library Friday mornings.
Eugene Swedo began tutoring for the Read to Learn program in 1992. Swedo has tutored more than 1,200 hours, which also makes him a Gold member of the Club of Honor program.
He tutors at three of the 13 site locations and he always has perfect attendance. As a veteran, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program and is a wonderful mentor to new volunteers.
District 214 Community Education Read to Learn program’s major goal is to improve the quality of life in the Northwest suburbs by raising the level of literacy among adults.
