Poll Vault: When should kids have their own phones?

If your middle-school son complains that he’s the only one in his class without a phone, he’s likely not exaggerating.
A 2012 study by ORC International for the National Consumers League revealed that 56 percent of parents of children ages 8 to 12 had given their kids cellphones. And the older a child is, the more likely he or she is to have a device.
When is the best time to bestow an iPhone 5 or Galaxy S4? Should younger kids have phones that are only, well, phones — with no cameras or Internet access?
If you’ve already provided your child with a phone, do you have any limits in place on calling or texting? Do you monitor their recent calls and messages?
