I-94 reopened near Wisconsin line after crash
All lanes of the Tri-State Tollway have reopened near the Wisconsin state line following a crash involving two semi-trucks and three cars, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 1:15 p.m. Friday when a northbound box truck blew a tire and sideswiped a 5-axle semitrailer truck. The second truck proceeded to hit a light pole, which fell into the southbound lanes and struck three cars, according to Trooper Michelle Kistulinec of the Illinois State Police.
One of the trucks caught fire.
A total of five people were transported to area hospitals by emergency responders from the Newport Township Fire Protection District.
Police shut down all lanes of Interstate 94 between Route 173/Rosecrans Road and Route 41 for about three hours during cleanup of the crash. Vehicles were directed off the tollway to Rosecrans and Route 41. Northbound traffic had been backed up from Route 132 to Route 173, and southbound traffic had been backed up from Highway 50 in Kenosha, Wis. to Route 41, according to WBBM Newsradio traffic reports.
