Park district’s done job; now it’s up to us

Following the recent tragic death on the path around Lake Arlington, Arlington Heights came up with a plan to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Today, as I biked the path, I was impressed with the splendid job the Arlington Heights Park District has done in implementing that plan. Every few hundred feet, there are brilliant red and blue markers painted on the path, indicating which side is for pedestrian use and which is for wheeled use, and what is the proper direction for travel.

In addition, there are signposts indicating which side and direction is for bikers and roller bladers, and which is for walkers and runners. Only a moron could fail to understand the new usage of the path.

Alas, we have our share of morons, who continue to use the wrong side and travel in the wrong direction, presaging another tragedy. Perhaps for a time, the park district can provide an employee on site to explain the new safety rules to those too stupid or too obstinate to obey.
