Boomers’ Giovenco dominates Slammers
The Schaumburg Boomers posted a 7-0 win over the host Joliet Slammers behind 7 shutout innings from Mike Giovenco on Thursday night. It was the Boomers’ fifth straight win.
Giovenco worked allowed just 3 hits while walking three and striking out five to win his fourth straight decision. The Roselle resident has worked into the seventh in his last four outings. The shutout was the third of the season for the Boomers and the first since June 27, a 1-0 decision in 11 innings at Traverse City. Tony Delmonico and Dexter Price finished out the win with an inning apiece.
The Boomers collected all the runs they would need in the second inning. Brian McConkey led off with a single and scored from first on a Frank Pfister double. Michael Valadez, returning to the lineup for the first time since July 24, capped the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly. Chad Mozingo homered in the third to extend the lead to 3-0, the second consecutive night with a homer. Schaumburg tacked on two in the fifth and single runs in the eighth and ninth to finish off the scoring. Pfister drove home three and Valadez two as the Boomers posted 10 hits, five for extra bases.
