Vernon Hills Girl Scout earns Gold Award with service project

Submitted by Shruti Gulati

The Gold Award is the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of America. It is a project that is done in and for the Scout’s community. For her project, Shruti Gulati of Vernon Hills chose to have a book drive and a reading session for women and children shelters in the less fortunate areas of Chicago.

She set up the book drive at two KinderCares in her area, and in her English class at school. With the help of Hawthorn Elementary School, who displayed her flyer on their website, she received enough books to donate to three shelters: the Primo Center for Women and Children, Maria’s Shelter and The Tabitha House.

“I chose to base my project on education because some of the children in these areas may want to learn how to read and write but do not have the resources or money for it,” Gulati said.
