Aurora police investigate half-dozen shootings
At least a half-dozen shootings took place in Aurora over the weekend, with three people wounded, police said yesterday. Police continue to investigate the shootings and say they may be gang- or drug-related. Anyone with info is encouraged to call Aurora police at (630) 256-5500. Full story.
Glen Ellyn approves zoning for nursing home
A 46-bed nursing home is coming to Glen Ellyn after the village board voted last night 4-1 in favor of granting zoning approvals for the Autumn Leaves memory care facility. The facility would sit on a 3.84-acre site on the northwest corner of Geneva and Bloomingdale roads currently occupied by a single-family home. Full story.
Back to summer at Independence Grove
A bomb threat that kept the Independence Grove Forest Preserve near Libertyville closed for three days last week didn’t deter visitors yesterday, who enjoyed recreational activities as usual. Authorities have said the threat was specific to a private event at the park and no bomb was ever discovered after searches of the preserve. Full story.
Driver pleads guilty in fatal Addison crash
A drunken driver who struck the back of an Illinois State Police squad car, killing the occupant of the back seat, pleaded guilty yesterday to aggravated DUI charges in the February 2012 crash. Frank Caruso’s car broke down on I-290 in Addison. The crash happened as he warmed up in the squad car while waiting for a tow truck. Full story.
Cleanup continues after Friday’s storm
Crews continued cleanup yesterday after strong winds caused tree damage and left about 18,000 customers in the Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect area without power. Power was restored by 11 a.m. Sunday, but cleaning up downed trees and limbs continued throughout yesterday. Full story.

About 30 premium Daily Herald subscribers yesterday took advantage of the first in a series of six workshops put on by the Daily Herald and Microsoft at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg. Cubs trade Garza for several prospects
Starting pitcher Matt Garza got traded to the Texas Rangers yesterday for four and maybe five young players. The trade drew third baseman Mike Olt, right-handed pitcher Justin Grimm, right-handed pitching prospect C.J. Edwards and one or two players to be named, depending on what the Cubs choose. Braun suspended for season
Milwaukee Brewers’ Ryan Braun, a former National League MVP, has been suspended without pay for the remaining 65 games of his season after being tied to a Florida clinic accused of distributing performance-enhancing drugs. The suspension will cost him $3 million of his $8.5 million salary. Full story.
