Bloomingdale man charged with injuring infant son

A Bloomingdale man squeezed his infant son so hard he broke the child’s ribs and leg in an effort to make him stop crying, authorities said.

Steven Brewer, 19, of the 200 block of Frisco Street, was being held Friday in DuPage County jail on $150,000 bail. He was indicted Thursday on charges of aggravated battery to a child and aggravated domestic battery.

Prosecutors said Brewer and the child’s mother took the 3-month-old boy to a doctor in early June. The doctor found the infant had several fractured ribs and a broken right femur.

Brewer implicated himself in a subsequent interview, according to prosecutors, who said he had been frustrated because the boy was crying and wouldn’t go to sleep.

According to court records, prosecutors allege Brewer injured the infant by squeezing him with his hands. The injuries occurred on one or two occasions in late May.

The defendant had recently moved in with the boy, the boy’s mother, and the boy’s grandmother, authorities said.

If convicted of the most serious charge, Brewer could face three to five years in prison. His arraignment is Monday in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.
