Northwest Choral Society’s ‘The Sound of Musicals’ June 2

The Northwest Choral Society, under the direction of artistic director Alan Wellman, will present “The Sound of Musicals” at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, at the Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Court.

The concert will feature the medley 100 Years of Broadway arranged by Mac Huff, and the chorus will be accompanied by a pit orchestra.

Celebrating a century of history for the Great White Way along 42nd Street and Broadway in the heart of Manhattan, the choral revue moves from the early years of “Tin Pan Alley” (“Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy”) through Rodgers and Hammerstein’s standards (“Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” and “If I Loved You”) along with the golden years of traditional Broadway (“Hello, Dolly!,” “Mame,” “On the Street Where You Live”). With the groundbreaking music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim (“Company,” “Superstar”) and contemporary hits (“Greased Lightin’,” “This Joint is Jumpin’”), the concert is sure to make the audience want to singalong.

Selections from Broadway favorites “All That Jazz,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Cabaret” also will be featured.

“The Sound of Musicals” will be NWCS’s final concert for the 2012-13 season. The next concerts will be Dec. 7 and 8, featuring John Rutter’s “Joy to the World” and Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols.”

Founded in 1965, the Northwest Choral Society is a nonprofit organization that promotes and encourages the appreciation, understanding and performance of a wide variety of outstanding choral literature. Its adult membership resides in Chicago and the Northwest suburbs.
