Sen. Murphy has ‘extensive’ surgery for softball injury
SPRINGFIELD — State Sen. Matt Murphy had “extensive” surgery Friday on the knee he seriously injured during the annual House vs. Senate softball game in Springfield.
A spokeswoman for the Illinois Senate GOP said the Palatine Republican is wearing a cast after “extensive surgical repair” of a tendon in his knee.
Lawmakers are meeting at the Capitol next week, and Murphy could be there, said Patty Schuh, spokeswoman for Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno.
Murphy hurt his knee when trying to run out a grounder to first base Wednesday in lawmakers’ annual game.
“When my left foot hit first base, my knee went out,” he said this week.
He was called safe, but the House won the game.
Murphy was carried off my an ambulance and returned to the suburbs Thursday.
Murphy works as one of the Senate Republicans’ leaders in budget talks, and May is the most important month for that discussion. Lawmakers face a deadline of May 31 to put a spending plan together.
In 2010, Murphy ran an unsuccessful primary campaign for lieutenant governor and has served in the Senate since 2007.
