Students fight floods in Addison

I would like to give credit to a couple of volunteer groups that help prevent a serious flooding problem in an area where there has been serious flooding problems in the past.

The area is the Salt Creek that runs through Addison. From Lake Street to North Avenue it runs right along Villa Avenue. After a heavy rain there are a couple of spots where the creek will overflow and shut down Villa Avenue and on occasion flood the homes in the area.

The first group was from Addison Trail High School. Someone asked for help and a lot of students responded. They filled sand bags and built a wall along Villa Avenue from Lake to Myrick Avenue. That wall stoped the creek from getting to the homes in that area. I also saw the superintendent of High School District 88 out there watching his students work really hard.

The second group was a younger group of students who were filling sand bags on Alden Drive where the village dropped off a couple loads of sand and bags. After filling the bags they were taking them around the area with a wheel barrel and making them available for people to put in front of their basement windows or in front of their openings for crawl spaces. So if the wall along Villa did not hold the water back, the houses had protection to stop the water from getting into their basements or crawl space.

The wall along Villa Avenue held the homes in the area were saved from a serious flooding problem. So, a thank you goes out to this group of students who prevented a serious flooding problem happening in this area.
