Candidate to replace Beavers has ethical troubles

A published report says a leading candidate to replace convicted Commissioner William Beavers on the Cook County Board has some ethics problems of his own.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Wednesday that former state official Stanley Moore was fined $3,000 for campaigning during work hours when he was a deputy director of the Illinois Department of Transportation. The state’s Executive Ethics Commission says he paid if off this week.

Cook County Democratic leaders are set to meet Thursday to choose a replacement for Beavers. He was convicted last month of tax evasion for not declaring campaign cash he gambled away as income. The law requires he resign his post.

Beavers’ replacement will serve the rest of his term, which ends in December 2014.
