Mascot for Cubs would be just fine

News of the Cubs mulling the introduction of a mascot got me thinking.

First of all, they're the only team in town without a mascot, right?

Secondly, when's the last time you actually heard any fan mention any mascot from any team at any time?

For the most part they're just white noise, present but not noticed.

So in summation, a mascot at Wrigley is fine.

And if it has to be a cute little Cub, at least give it the tude' of “Ted.”

Now that would be awesome.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain:While Phil Emery will get most of the credit #8212; and rightly so #8212; for his big free-agent signings this week, you know some of the kudos have to go to cap master Cliff Stein, who no doubt played a major role as well. So, kudos Cliff. Just asking: Why don't we know more about Stein, or the other behind-the-scenes power brokers around town for that matter? Each team seems to have one. How 'bout them Hawks?Just for the cover shot alone, this week's Sports illustrated is worth the price of a subscription.Urlacher to the Vikings??!!Doesn't bother me one bit. But, keep in mind, you only have one of your starting linebackers signed right now.Remedy that and you're good to go.Not kidding:I realize I might be the only person unhappy with the release of tight end Matt Spaeth.Just think the guy was solid #8230; and a perfect backup.Must-see TV:Any time the 49ers and the Seahawks faceoff next season.Man, oh man, that's the real stuff there.Springtime in Augusta:Tiger, Masters, Phil, Azaleas, Oosty, Brandt, Rory, Ditka ... gonna be great. And only a few weeks away. Sweeeet. The contrarian:I know all the arguments for getting rid of him, but I still think Bill Carmody should get one more season at Northwestern.A healthy team and some good recruits #8212; see what he can do next season. If it's bad, he's gone.Oh come on:Andy Richter, you're better than that. There it is:It's not easy to find a bright spot in the NHL realignment plan set to begin next season, but there is at least one:#8220;The new alignment ensures that all 30 teams play in all 30 arenas at least once a season for the first time since 1997-98.#8221;Here comes the Hogs:With the Blackhawks on the road for a while, it's a perfect time to see the future Hawks in action when the Rockford IceHogs take on the Wolves on Sunday (3 p.m) at Allstate Arena. As an added bonus, the Wolves will be wearing those awesome St. Patty's sweaters ... and you might catch veteran Steve Montador as he rehabs with the Hogs. Fun with Twitter:For a good chuckle, check out the exchange of pictures #8212; and gentle ribbing #8212; between Bulls teammates Nate Robinson and Rip Hamilton from a couple of days ago.The undisputed champion: I used to think for pure spectacle, you couldn't top race day at the Indianapolis 500.But after watching the pomp and ceremony surrounding the selection of the new pope, I officially stand corrected.Amazing.FBN40002687Tight end Martellus Bennett smiles after Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery introduced him during a news conference at the Bears' practice facility on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, in Lake Forest, Ill.
