Palatine death investigation continues

Palatine police on Friday continued their investigation into the death of Jieru Chen.

The 77-year-old Palatine woman died Thursday, possibly after a slow-moving vehicle hit her as it backed out of a private drive on the 400 block of North Hicks Road.

Police said Chen may have hit her head on the pavement when she fell about noon, either from moving out of the car’s path or from being bumped into at a very slow speed. Cmdr. Kurt Schroeder said it appears Chen’s death was “a tragic accident” and that the investigation is proceeding slowly because Chen’s husband, who was with his wife, speaks only Mandarin. No citations have been issued.

Jieru Chen’s body had yet to be transported to the Cook County medical examiner’s office as of late Friday, a spokeswoman said.
