Three men charged in murder of Aurora high school student

Three men will appear before a Kane County judge this morning after being charged in connection with the murder of an 18-year-old West Aurora High School senior over the weekend. Abigail Villalpando, 18, of Aurora, was found burned beyond recognition by the Kane County sheriff's department K-9 unit around 9 a.m. Saturday in a wooded area just inside the village of Montgomery in the area of Fifth Street and Wabansia Avenue, according to a release from the police department. The woman was reportedly beaten to death with a hammer before being set on fire. West Aurora High School officials said the school's crisis team of psychologists and social workers will be on hand to talk to students who need it today. Full story.

Snow may cause messy morning commute

A winter clipper moving into the suburbs could create a messy commute this morning. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory through noon today for the entire Chicago and Northern Illinois region. Between 2 and 6 inches of snow is expected to have fallen starting last night with snow showers lingering throughout the day, according to the advisory. “Snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour may occur at times, leading to rapid snow accumulation on roadways,” according to the advisory, with heaviest intensity up to 8 a.m. Full story.

Dist. 33 cancels classes as contract talks collapse

Teachers will be walking picket lines and thousands of students will be locked out of classes today in West Chicago Elementary District 33 after the school board and teachers union failed to come to a contract agreement following nearly 11 hours at the bargaining table. School board spokesman Dave Barclay said parents were being informed late Sunday night and early this morning that classes are canceled. Full story.

3-vehicle crash on I-294 kills Vernon Township man

Police continue to investigate what killed a Vernon Township man pronounced dead after a three-vehicle crash early Sunday morning on Interstate 294 in Lake County. State police as well as the Deerfield Fire Department responded to the crash on southbound I-294 near Lake-Cook Road. According to preliminary reports, a car rear-ended a tow truck while driving south. The driver of the tow truck exited his vehicle to speak to the driver of the car, when a third car — a taxi with two passengers — hit the first car and began to spin out. Full story.

No one injured in Naperville restaurant grease fire

A grease fire at a Naperville restaurant last night was quickly extinguished, fire officials said. The fire department received a call from employees at Katy's Dumpling House, 790 Royal St. George Drive, at 8:16 p.m. that there was a grease fire in the kitchen that started in a wok, and they had attempted to extinguish it, according to a news release. Everyone was evacuated safely, and there were no injuries reported. Damages were estimated at about $40,000, officials said. Full story.

Restitution clock ticking for former Kane elections chief

A disbarred attorney who was once tapped to run elections in Kane County has a little more than two weeks to cough up $14,000 or risk possibly spending time in jail for contempt of court. David Bruun, 72, of Elgin Township was sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of bilking an elderly man out of a $500,000 trust in 1998. He has been ordered by Judge James Hallock to pay a $14,000 lump sum to get current on restitution payments owed to the victim, records show. Full story.

Ravens beat 49ers 34-31 in Super Bowl

A power outage at the Super Bowl put the nation's biggest sporting event on hold for more than a half-hour last night, interrupting an otherwise electric back-and-forth game that ended with Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens as NFL champions thanks to a 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. As usual, it was a crazy win for the Ravens
