West Chicago offers municipal aggregation update

West Chicago, Illinois: January 25, 2013 - Municipal aggregation, which is a program that allows local governments to bundle – or aggregate – residential and small commercial retail electric accounts, and to seek bids for a lower cost source of power similar to the way in which municipalities negotiate contracts for waste disposal or cable television, is planned for West Chicago.

A referendum was passed on November 6, 2012, authorizing the City of West Chicago to arrange for the supply of electricity for its residential and small commercial retail customers. The City has drafted its Plan of Governance and Operations, which details how the City will administer the program, and will be hosting two Public Hearings to obtain input on the Plan preceding the City Council meetings of February 4, 2013 and February 18, 2013 at 6:30 p.m.

Once the Plan of Governance and Operations is adopted, the City will seek bids from electric suppliers and hope to present a contract to City Council for consideration in March. Once a contract with the chosen vendor is approved by City Council, the vendor provides the opportunity for those wishing to opt-out.

Those currently considering a contract with electric suppliers may wish to wait until such time as a contract is signed by the City and the City rate is determined.
