‘Who’ matters more than ‘where’ for meal
I read the Nov. 27 Fence Post and would like to respond to Mr. Joe Littwin from Palatine. Mr. Littwin was responding to an article about more Americans eating Thanksgiving at restaurants instead of with family at home. As in Mr. Littwin’s case, my husband and I were also brought up in households where extended families celebrated Thanksgiving at home. However, our situation has changed. More of our relatives have their own extended families or have moved out of town and celebrate with in-laws, etc. The last two years, we have celebrated at a restaurant.
This was not planned, but it happened because three family members are in the hospitality industry and had to work on Thanksgiving. We did not want to 1) eat too late in the day waiting for these hardworking individuals to come home, too tired to eat or, more importantly, 2) eat without them. We felt it would be better to eat where they are working so we could at least be a family together.
In our situation, it was not about where we were eating, but with whom we were eating. Family is family no matter where you are able to have your Thanksgiving celebration.
