Troop 964 Scouts volunteer with Citizens for Conservation
Two Boy Scouts from Lake Zurich Troop 964 contributed a combined seven hours of community service helping volunteers from Citizens for Conservation install a new limestone path at CFC’s headquarters.
Jared Morrison and Ritchie Ahlgrim hauled wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of soil and stone, laid landscape fabric, hauled fine limestone, hand-leveled the path, hauled brick pavers, and backfilled low areas of CFC’s parking lot.
Much welcomed assistance arrived via CFC volunteer Bill Hunter and his back-saving Bobcat. Hunter enjoyed the opportunity to use his relatively new machine, and all the volunteers, including helper and photographer Donna Bolzman, appreciated the tractor making the path installation an easier one.
Once the soil was removed and the future path leveled, volunteers struggled with keeping the landscape fabric in place in gale-force winds. Fighting quickly approaching rain and impending darkness, the Scouts agreed to stay an extra hour to complete the spreading of the fine limestone at the rear of the garage, around the southern end, and into the parking lot.
Scouts from Troop 964 are familiar with the garage, as Eagle candidate Alex Zuhlke only just completed his Eagle project by installing a new drainage system along the rear of the garage, and recently Billy Ranick learned he achieved his Eagle Award by caulking and painting the garage last fall.
This service opportunity was coordinated by CFC’s Youth Education committee. To discuss future volunteer opportunities, contact Pat Winkelman at youth-ed@citizensforconservation.org or call (847) 382-7283.
