Chicago men charged with holding up Streamwood Aldi
A Cook County judge ordered two Chicago men held on bail of $500,000 and $1 million and issued a no-bail arrest warrant for a third after police say they robbed a Streamwood grocery store at gunpoint late Tuesday.
Judge Jill Cerone Marisie set bail at $500,000 for Derrick Shelby, 60, and $1 million for Joseph Bobbitt, 46, who police say is hospitalized at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates for reasons unrelated to his arrest and did not appear at Friday’s bond hearing in Rolling Meadows. Marisie issued a no bail warrant for the third defendant, Freddie Clemons, 42, who fled from police and remains at large.
Three men entered the Aldi store on the 900 block of Irving Park Road about 10 p.m. Tuesday with a firearm and ordered employees to open the cash registers and lie on the floor nearby, said Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Walsh during Friday’s hearing. The trio fled the store with $844, Walsh said.
Shelby was apprehended by Streamwood police outside the store, while Clemmons and Bobbitt ran, Walsh said. Bobbitt was found a short time later hiding in a bush on the 1500 block of McKool Avenue, Walsh said.
Police recovered a weapon and an Aldi bag with a large amount of cash. They charged the defendants with armed robbery, which is punishable by six to 30 years in prison.
At the time of his arrest, Bobbitt was on bond on a pending burglary charge. Prosecutors say his trial was scheduled to continue Wednesday in Chicago, the day after his arrest.
Shelby’s criminal background includes a 2006 conviction for possession of a controlled substance for which he was sentenced to one year in prison. He received 24 months’ special probation for burglary in 2005. That same year, he received 24 months’ probation and 180 days in jail for possession of a controlled substance, Walsh said. He was sentenced to 30 months’ probation in 1992 for manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance and one year of supervision in 1990 for theft, Walsh said. She did not offer background on the other defendants.
The men next appear in court on Nov. 19.
