October is Senior Health Month in Mount Prospect

Senior Citizens in Mount Prospect will have the opportunity to learn about health concerns facing those 65 years and older during the month of October.

Nordic Walking, presented on Thursday, October 18 from 1:00-2:30 pm at the Village Hall, will teach seniors how to get a full body work out by walking with a specially designed set of poles. Even seniors who use stabilization devices can participate in this program as the poles increase balance and burn 46% more calories than walking alone. Instruction will be given by certified instructors John and Susan Rozanski.

State Representative David Harris will sponsor a Senior Health Fair at Village Hall on Thursday October 25, 2012 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm.

Senior Sexuality and the Increasing Risk of HIV in the Golden Years is a program presented to educate seniors on why they are uniquely at risk to contract HIV and why they are one of the fastest growing HIV positive populations in the United States. The presentation will discuss senior sexuality, HIV testing, and the health implications of HIV in the senior years. This presentation will be given by Senior Health Educator, Dorie Barron of the Cook County Department of Public Health On Tuesday, October 30 at 9:30 am at the Village Hall.

All programs, with the exception of Representative Harris’ Senior Health Fair, require registration by calling the Human Services Department at 847-870-5680. All programs are free to the public.
