ELL teacher receives ‘A Day Made Better’ award

Tuesday, Oct. 2, dawned like most others for Hawthorn Elementary North ELL teacher Loretta Pittman — that is, until representatives from the local Office Max store burst into her classroom to surprise her with “A Day Made Better.”

In addition to cheers from her students and colleagues, Pittman received a selection of more than $1,000 in Office Max supplies to support her students and school.

Her equally surprised students joined in the celebration. One of the children quickly exclaimed, “Mrs. Pittman! You did one of our words!” and held up a card on which was written the word “achieve.”

Pittman has been a teacher at Hawthorn, bringing more than 17 years of education experience to her students. Most recently, she has been working with students in the English as a Second Language program at Hawthorn Elementary North.

Since she plans to retire at the end of this school year, it is especially exciting that Pittman received this prestigious honor.
