‘Winning’ in favor of meeting standards?

‘Winning’ in favor of meeting standards?

Our family received a letter from the administration of West Chicago Community High School informing us that “For the past five years, West Chicago Community High School has failed to meet the state’s academic standards.”

Recently, the school administrators and school board voted to leave the DuPage Valley Conference and accept an invitation to join the Metro Suburban Conference. The primary focus appeared to be the lack of “winning” in most of the sports that we participated in with the DVC.

As a former alum, athlete and coach at WCCHS, I understand the desire and fulfillment to win. However, I also saw the lack of educational standards that allowed athletes to participate every week.

With that said, I hope the administration and school board can look themselves in the mirror knowing they have apparently traded “winning” for “five years of not meeting academic standards.”

I wonder where the level of education would be if the administration had executed the same due diligence it took to leave the DVC.
