Housing counselor marks 25 years serving the elderly

A Park Ridge nonprofit that serves the elderly and low-income families recently held a luncheon to honor the woman who has served as its housing counselor for 25 years.

When Eva Gertzfeld joined The Center of Concern in 1987, the social service agency placed as few as 10 clients per year in shared accommodations with homeowners, often elderly, who needed extra income or companionship.

Eva now interviews more than 450 clients per year to determine their suitability for shared accommodations. Known as shared housing, the program allows the elderly and others to stay in their homes when faced with financial or health problems.

“Every day I witness the hope that Eva brings to her clients, every so often seeing them enter in tears and leaving with a hopeful smile on their faces,” said Pam Reed, who has worked as Gertzfeld’s assistant for 12 years.

The luncheon for Gertzfeld was held Aug. 23 at the Great Chicago Food and Beverage Company, a restaurant in the West Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago.

The longest-tenured employee at The Center of Concern, Gertzfeld has also overseen the agency’s employment counseling and in-home health care programs. Her current work includes overseeing a transitional housing program for homeless individuals and a state-funded program designed to help renters facing eviction.

Gertzfeld has also recruited volunteers to provide tax and legal advice to The Center of Concern’s elderly and low-income clients.

Founded in 1978, The Center of Concern offers housing assistance, support services and counseling for seniors, the disabled and others in need, enabling them to live with dignity and independence.

The Center of Concern’s offices are at 1580 N. Northwest Hwy., Suite 310, Park Ridge. Visit www.centerofconcern.org. or call (847) 823-0453 for information.
