Well-known authors to visit Vernon library

The Vernon Area Public Library, 300 Olde Halfday Road, Lincolnshire, will welcome an impressive slate of authors for public events in September, including witty memoirist Michael Perry on Saturday, Sept. 1, children’s author Dav Pilkey on Monday, Sept. 10, Chicago crime fiction favorite Libby Fischer Hellmann Tuesday, Sept. 11, and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Julia Keller for a luncheon Thursday, Sept. 20.

Wisconsin humorist Michael Perry will speak and read at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 1, in support of his new book, “Visiting Tom: A Man, A Highway, and the Road to Roughneck Grace.” The event will include a display of vintage tractors, courtesy of the Lake County Farm Heritage Association, and an 1800-pound cannon, courtesy of Taylor’s Battery, Chicago Company B. Photo opportunities will be available.

Perry is the best-selling author of several memoirs, including “Population 485: Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time” and “Truck: A Love Story.” He has performed and produced two live audience humor recordings (“I Got It from the Cows” and “Never Stand Behind a Sneezing Cow”) and he performs regularly with his band, the Long Beds. Creator of the popular children’s “Captain Underpants” series, Dav Pilkey, will sign his new book, “Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers” at 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10. The evening will include the screening of several short films about Dav and his world of zany characters, a children’s craft, and book signing. Tickets are required. Chicago author Libby Fischer Hellmann will join the library’s bimonthly Evening Book Discussion at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11, to discuss her book “A Bitter Veil” and the insights she gained about life in Iran as she researched and wrote it. Attendees should read the book before they come. Copies are available at the reference desk in the Adult Services department at the library. Registration is required. All are invited to a luncheon with Julia Keller in support of her debut mystery novel, “A Killing in the Hills” at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20. Keller is a cultural critic for the Chicago Tribune where she won a Pulitzer Prize. She was born in West Virginia, where this novel is set. The luncheon is free, but registration is required.
