Grammy artist to perform at veterans' charity show

On Saturday, Aug. 25, the Streamwood Veterans of Foreign Wars lodge 5151, in conjunction with the Hanover Park District, will host a combined variety show to raise funds for important programs they provide to support both military veterans as well as current active military personnel.

The “Tribute To Our Armed Forces All Star Variety Show” will be held from 1-3:30 p.m., at the Hanover Park Community Center, 1919 Walnut St., and will feature a number of different acts including Joe Cantafio, the Streamwood High School Band, John & Kathryn Atwood, Thadeus Project, the Legacy Girls and the Forty Days Band. Also featured, will be a special guest appearance by Grammy recording artist Denise Brigham from Pat Boone's Gold Label Artists in Los Angeles.

Brigham, who lives in the Northwest suburbs, is a well-known and respected star in the Adult Standards/Traditional Pop music format and performs in concerts around the country singing the music of the Great American Songbook and the American Popular Song. In 2009, her award winning album “Hotel LaFayette,” an all-Chicago production, topped the national Standards radio airplay charts and went on to be chosen by professional broadcasters as one of the top five Traditional Pop albums of the year.

While Brigham loves to travel and perform in concert, one of her biggest passions is doing shows for the military veterans. She does several shows each year in Chicago for the vets in the long-term care unit of Hines Hospital thanks to the efforts of Joe Cantafio and his “Forgotten Heroes” project. She is quick to say they are the greatest audience in the world and she is thrilled to donate her time and services for them.

“They are the real stars,” said Brigham. “I want to do what little I can to thank them for their service and their sacrifices.” Even in her regular concerts, she always has a special segment that honors veterans.

When Fred Hossfeld, APC chairman of VFW Post 5151, in Streamwood, asked her to take part in their fundraising show she happily agreed. Brigham will make a special appearance to sing a couple of songs from her album and also close the show with a special patriotic performance. Afterward she will be available in the lobby for autographs and will also donate a portion of any sales there to the VFW.

Tickets for the show are $10 per person or $15 per couple and can be purchased at the door. Food and beverages will also be available and there will be a number prizes raffled off between performances.
