Residents escape early-morning Geneva fire

No one was injured in an early morning fire Friday in the 300 block of South Fifth Street in Geneva, fire officials said.

The Geneva Fire Department was called to the house at 4:07 a.m. and saw smoke coming from the first and second floors of the two-story residence, Deputy Chief Mark Einwich said.

The residents were home at the time of the fire and were able to escape prior to firefighters arriving on the scene.

Fire officials said the fire was contained to the first floor of the structure, but that there was smoke damage throughout.

It’s been determined the fire was accidental, and the exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation, authorities said. There was no damage estimate available early Friday. No adjacent structures were affected.

St. Charles, Batavia, Elburn, North Aurora and Fermilab fire departments provided assistance.
