Woman drives car into Schaumburg pond, escapes unharmed

A Schaumburg woman who accidentally drove her car into a pond Wednesday afternoon at a village apartment complex near the 2500 block of Brush Road got out safely on her own, authorities said. “She got out herself and she was assisted to the shore by maintenance workers,” Schaumburg police Sgt. John Nebl said.

Schaumburg Deputy Fire Chief William Spencer said units were dispatched to the scene at the Tree House Apartments at 2:08 p.m., arriving around 2:15 p.m. After ensuring the driver had sustained no injuries, they began to search the water.

Nebl said police did not believe anyone else was in the vehicle, but divers searched the pond as a precaution. Spencer said a language barrier between the driver and authorities led them to take that precaution.

Fire personnel from several towns were on the scene, including Des Plaines, Schaumburg, Wheeling, Hoffman Estates, Palatine and Arlington Heights.

After authorities confirmed no other people were in the water, the woman’s white Kia Sorento was towed out of its position in the water, roughly 15 yards from the apartment’s parking lot, by 3:20 p.m.
