Using religion to justify intolerance

Over the last few months the Daily Herald has printed numerous letters on gay marriages. Nearly all of those who write opposing gay marriages start talking about Christian, or Judeo-Christian opposition to gay marriages.

I’m tired of people using their religion to hide behind their intolerance. There are numerous Christian denominations that perform gay marriages. There are others that bless unions, but don’t perform actual marriages. There are many that have pastors, ministers, etc., that are married gays.

In 2006, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that the country must recognize the marriage of gays coming into the country from other countries.

All of the above does not cover the many religions that are not Christian or Jewish that do accept gay marriage.

So if you want to express your intolerance, feel free to do so, but don’t tell us that the Christian religion or the Jewish religion says that it’s wrong. That is unless your religion somehow speaks for everyone.

As an aside, my wife and I have been married for 44 years.
