$50,000 bail for Batavia man charged in attempted armed robbery
A judge set bail at $50,000 Wednesday morning for a Batavia man accused of trying to rob a woman at a drive-up automated teller machine.
“I am concerned about the seriousness of the (crime). It’s not the (felony) class ... it’s what happened,” said Kane County Judge John Walters, approving the bail requested by a prosecutor. “I’ll go along with this, but reluctantly. I’d rather see a higher bond.”
Zachary Schulz, 20, of the 700 block of Houston Street, can post $5,000 bond to be freed from the Kane County jail. His next court date is 9 a.m. July 20.
Schulz is charged with attempted armed robbery with no firearm. It is punishable by 4 to 15 years in prison.
According to the synopsis read in court, Schulz is on probation for a 2012 conviction in Dubuque, Iowa, for possession of a controlled substance.
His attorney, Richard Russo, said it was for a “small amount” of marijuana.
According to Batavia police, a woman reported around 2 a.m. July 10 that, while she was using an ATM at the Chase bank branch at 130 S. Batavia Ave., a man carrying a knife approached her. She drove off. Police found a knife at the scene.
Tuesday afternoon, police say, Schulz walked in to the lobby of the Batavia Police Department and said that he was the person for whom they were looking.
