Wauconda garden club awards scholarship

Submitted by Hilde A. Lichter

The Plant and Garden Club of Wauconda recently awarded a $500 scholarship to Kristine Micheletti, a 2012 graduate of Wauconda High School. She will be attending Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, in the fall majoring in zoology.

Kristine is a member of the National Honor Society, having taken Honors and Advanced Placement classes all four years while achieving a 4-plus GPA and perfect attendance. She participated in different sports and band groups, various clubs, committees, and volunteer activities.

Her community service involvement with Bookfriends International, NFP, a public foundation that obtains books and sends them to schools in East Africa, is a passion of hers.

She has given many hours of her time organizing the inventory of books in the warehouse and then organizing them for shipment.

The members of the Plant and Garden Club of Wauconda earn the money for the annual scholarship by holding a spring plant sale the Sunday after Mother’s Day at the historical Andrew Cook House between the high school and the library on Main Street.

Club meetings are held the fourth Monday of the month at the Wauconda Township Hall, 505 E. Bonner Road. The public is invited to attend all meetings, lectures, and workshops.
