Schaumburg’s garden earns mayors’ kudos

The United States Conference of Mayors has informed village President Al Larson that Schaumburg has been awarded the Outstanding Achievement City Livability award for cities smaller than 100,000 population in the 2012 City Livability Awards for the village’s Intergenerational Produce Garden Program.

The Intergenerational Produce Garden, located across the parking lot from The Barn, is beginning its second year this summer. Ripe produce from the garden is used for the daily nutritious lunch served at the village’s senior and teen programs at The Barn, as well as being donated to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry.

The Conference of Mayors City Livability Program sponsored by Waste Management, Inc., honors mayors and their city governments for developing programs that enhance the quality of life in urban areas. Established in 1979, the City Livability Awards are given annually to 10 mayors and their cities — a first-place award and four Outstanding Achievement Awards for cities under 100,000 population, and a first-place and four Outstanding Achievement Awards for cities of 100,000 or more inhabitants.

The 20 award-winning cities were determined by an independent panel of judges, selected by The U.S. Conference of Mayors. The awards were announced at the annual meeting in Orlando on June 14.

The other 2012 winners are listed alphabetically by city: Large cities: Baton Rouge; Boston; Bridgeport, Conn.; Frisco, Texas; Hartford, Conn.; Jersey City, N.J.; Louisville, Ky.; Orlando; San Diego; and St. Louis. Small cities: Evanston; Lake Oswego, Ore.; Medford, Mass.; Napa, Calif.; Schaumburg; Sumter, S.C.; Tamarac, Fla.; West Palm Beach, Fla.; West Hollywood, Calif.; and York, Pa.
