Boomers outbelt CornBelters
The West Division leading Schaumburg Boomers improved to a season-best 11 games over .500 by recording an 8-0 shutout of the host Normal CornBelters in the rubber game of a three-game series.
The Boomers (25-14) scored in six different innings and rode the arm of Tyler Watkins (2-4) to the victory. Watkins allowed just 7 hits while walking one and striking out four.
Chad Mozingo opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a two-out single up the middle to score Sean Mahley. Schaumburg scored 5 runs with two outs in the game. Nate Baumann scored 3 and provided breathing room with a two out two-run single in the third.
Eight different players recorded hits for the Boomers, who slugged a season-high 16 in the win. Mike Valadez led the way with 3 hits. Mahley scored three runs. Jason Braun finished off the shutout with a perfect ninth.
