Boomers enjoy 10-run first

The first-place Schaumburg Boomers sent 14 men to the plate in a 10-run first inning en route to a 15-10 victory Sunday over the Rockford RiverHawks at Boomers Stadium.

The Boomers (22-13), who built a 15-0 lead, held off the RiverHawks (12-22) and improved to 16-4 at home in their inaugural Frontier League season.

RiverHawks starter Jordan Liette, who lasted just a third of an inning, walked four of the first five Boomers, throwing 13 straight balls. The Boomers capitalized on an error before Jereme Milons, the ninth batter of the inning, singled sharply up the middle to drive in Chad Mozingo and Nate Baumann and give the Boomers a 6-0 lead.

Reliever Eric Rohe did not fare much better. The Boomers’ Karexon Sanchez and Sean Mahley greeted the Carthage College alum with back-to-back triples to give the Boomers a 9-0 advantage.

Frank Pfister, who went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored, a walk and an RBI, singled to drive home Mahley and cap off the first-inning explosion.

The Boomers added 5 runs in the third, highlighted by Baumann’s 2-run blast over the Miller Lite Party Deck in left and an RBI single from Boomers catcher Mike Valadez.

Sanchez reached base four times with 2 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs scored in the leadoff spot, and Nick Kuroczko returned to the lineup after a day off by collecting 2 hits and scoring 2 runs.

Right-hander Shane Prance (1-0, 4.86 EAR) earned the victory, working 6 innings. The 6-foot-3 right-hander picked up his first professional win, allowing 5 runs on 11 hits with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks.

The RiverHawks’ Michael Hur scored three times and drove in 3 runs on 3 hits including a solo homer, and catcher Michael Thomas drove in 5 runs.

The Boomers go for the sweep Monday at 11 a.m.
