Religious bias must not trample freedom

I am never thrilled about or supportive of religious fanatics in any guise, whether it be Muslim, Christian or whatever, but it seems a shame that the Meadows Club in Rolling Meadows was recently coerced into canceling a perfectly legitimate Islamic conference as a result of pressure and threats from the xenophobic conservative fringe. The right wing claims to be all for less restraint on business in the pursuit of capitalistic endeavors, until those endeavors bump up against their “Christian ideals.” Apparently, religious bias trumps the rights of business to operate within legal parameters, and if profits or jobs are lost in the process, oh well.

We all need to wake up to such narrow-mindedness and reject it outright. The rights and freedom of expression we enjoy as Americans are universal and are not limited to one faith.
