Wauconda man dies following scooter crash

A Wauconda man died Sunday following a motor scooter accident near his home, police said.

Jack Mead, 51, suffered fatal head injuries in the Saturday night crash at Oakdale Street and Woodland Avenue, Wauconda police Chief Douglas Larsson said.

Mead was riding a new scooter about 8:50 p.m. when he tried to avoid hitting a child who had run into his path, Larsson said.

Mead hit the child, lost control of the scooter and hit his head on the curb, Larsson said. He was not wearing a helmet.

The child was treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said.

Mead died at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m., according to the Lake County coroner’s office.

Mead’s blood alcohol level was .176, more than twice the legal threshold, police said.
