District 15 set to continue popular summer breakfast program

District 15's School Nutrition Services is set to continue its summer breakfast program that proved incredibly popular the past two years.

The program is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Summer Food Service Program, which requires any building with free and reduced-price lunch participation of 50 percent or more holding summer programs to offer at least one free meal per day.

Last year, the District served 8,131 meals through the program, which is federally funded and open to the public.

This year, the program will be offered at John G. Conyers Learning Academy and Jane Addams, Virginia Lake, Gray M. Sanborn, and Lake Louise Schools. Additionally, School Nutrition Services will provide free breakfasts at Falcon Park to anyone in the community age 18 or under as well as those enrolled in the Northeast Palatine Summer Camp run by the Palatine Opportunity Center in partnership with District 15 and a number of other public and private entities.

These breakfasts, which will be served Monday through Thursday (except for Wednesday, July 4), will be free to all community members 18 years of age and under, regardless of income.

Also, at Central Road and Lincoln Schools, breakfasts will be made available for purchase by all students enrolled in the Summer Blast program. Students who normally pay full or reduced prices for their lunches will be able to buy these breakfasts for their full or reduced prices ($1.25 or 30 cents, respectively), while those who qualify for free lunches during the school year will be able to eat at no charge.

“Lack of nutrition during the summer months is a serious concern, and these meals will meet nutrition standards set forth by the USDA,” said Bobbie Desprat, School Nutrition Services director.
