Wheaton Municipal Band plays kids concert June 14

Come hear the Wheaton Municipal Band's annual Kids' Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14 at Memorial Park, 208 W Union Ave. in Wheaton.

Approximately 50 Wheaton middle school students from Hubble, Franklin, Edison, and Monroe will blow their horns right next to some of Chicagoland's finest musicians. The joint performance will feature Wheaton composer Timothy Loest, band director at F.F. Peacock Middle School in Itasca, who has written over 55 Middle School Band works.

Wheaton Municipal Band Director, Dr. Bruce Moss, selected four of Loest's works for middle school band for the program. Early in the spring, the Wheaton middle school band directors started rehearsing the music with their students, helping them practice and prepare for their Wheaton Municipal Band debut. Jill Carr, Edison Middle School Band Director, jumped at the chance to have her students participate in this event. Eleven of her woodwind, brass and percussion students take to the Memorial Park stage at the Children's Concert.

The evening starts out at 6:30 p.m with an instrument petting zoo where kids of all ages can try out wind instruments. All are invited to toot on a trombone, whistle a flute, squawk on an oboe, and buzz a trumpet. Music and frolic follows at 7:30 p.m. (Note the earlier start time). Rated as one of the summer's favorite family concerts, come and enjoy music in Memorial Park. Of course there will be other great band works on the program including overtures, movie music, show tunes and marches.
