Mahley, Baumann boost the Boomers
The host Schaumburg Boomers defeated the first-place River City Rascals 6-5 on Saturday night.
The last two batters in the Boomers’ lineup led the charge. Sean Mahley collected a career-high and franchise-record 4 RBI, while Nate Baumann belted a home run and a pair of doubles.
Left-hander Jose Rodriguez, who was the Boomers’ first-round selection in the Frontier League draft, was solid in his second professional start, allowing 1 run and 2 hits in 4 innings.
Winning pitcher Dave Whigham (1-0) allowed 2 runs in 2 innings. Adam Tollefson pitched a scoreless eighth before allowing a 2-run homer in the ninth to the Rascals’ Gerardo Avila.
Patrick Mincey struck out North Park University alum Zach Deutscher for the final out to earn his third save of the season.
The Boomers wore special pink jerseys on Cancer Survivors’ Night presented by Northwest Community Healthcare and auctioned them off for charity during the game. Jersey sales totaled about $1,500, with proceeds benefiting a pair of NCH charities — the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund and the Gift a Mammogram Program. Survivors were honored on the field during a special pregame parade.
