Two types of errors on Roskam positions
On May 30, the Daily Herald printed two errors on its opinion page regarding U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam. Chris Greco of Carol Stream made an error of commission in his Fence Post letter to the editor. The “Our View” editorial made an error of omission.
Chris wrote that Peter Roskam supports reforming our tax code to eliminate tax loopholes and tax breaks. Maybe our Congressman does support those reforms in principal, but it would be hard for Chris or any of the voters in the 6th District to find actual evidence of such support. Mr. Roskam has voted against every attempt to eliminate the billions of dollars going to the oil industry in the form of tax subsidies.
In its editorial about the Domestic Violence Against Women Act, the Daily Herald praised Representatives Dold and Biggert for crossing party lines on what should have been a nonpartisan vote. They voted against the watered down House version of the bill.
However, the Daily Herald did not see fit to point out that Representative Roskam voted for the weaker bill, which left out protections for certain women. This omission by the Daily Herald does a disservice to voters in the 6th District.
Chris can be forgiven for not knowing the facts about Mr. Roskam, since Peter is a very adept politician. However, the Daily Herald seems to have deliberately covered up Mr. Roskam’s partisan vote by omitting the fact that he did not support the stronger domestic violence protection for all women. This cannot be forgiven. The Daily Herald should know better.
It is time to give someone else a chance to live up to Chris’ and the Daily Herald’s expectations for our U.S. representatives. Vote for Leslie Coolidge in the 6th Congressional District on Nov. 6.
