Swanson takes over at Elk Grove

Kathie Swanson, who compiled one of the finest records among Lake County coaches over the past six seasons while at Libertyville High School, has accepted the head girls basketball position at Elk Grove.

Swanson replaces Ryan Kirkorsky, who took over the girls program at Rolling Meadows last month.

Swanson, who will teach social studies at Elk Grove, was 126-49 and directed the Wildcats to the North Suburban Conference championship the last three years.

She also won two regional championships and won back-to-back championships at the Buffalo Grove Thanksgiving Tournament and Mundelein Holiday Classic in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons. Swanson’s 2010-2011 Wildcats went undefeated during the regular season and finished with a 29-1 record.

“I’m excited by the opportunity to come to Elk Grove High School and help lead the girls’ basketball program,” said Swanson, a Maine West High School graduate who resigned her Libertyville post after last season. “It’s a privilege to work at such a quality school and coach in a great conference.”

All-area forward Diamond Boyd, a junior last season, returns for the Grenadiers along with three-year starting guard Kelly Naughton. The Grens were 14-14 last season and 2-8 in the Mid-Suburban East.

“I’m looking forward to working with the players and coaching staff to help develop the program to its fullest ability,” Swanson added. “The potential exists to do great things here. Through hard work and preparation, we can be very competitive in the Mid Suburban League.”

As usual, Swanson will emphasize teamwork, strong defense, toughness and playing an up-tempo game.

“I appreciate the fact that Elk Grove’s administration has placed enough trust in me to help their athletics program continue to reach its goals,” she added. “I look forward to getting to work with the girls this summer and laying the foundation for what will be a successful year.”
