Firth, Young chosen in MLB amateur draft
For the second time in four years Wednesday, Stevenson graduate Scott Firth was selected in the Major League Baseball amateur draft.
Firth was picked by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 32nd round. The right-handed pitcher just completed his junior year for Clemson University, pitching 51 innings in relief and posting a 4-0 record and 2.09 ERA with 44 strikeouts.
In 2009, Firth was drafted in the 36th round by the Baltimore Orioles but chose to honor his letter of intent and attend Clemson.
On Wednesday, Firth was selected with the 998th overall pick. Two slots before him, also in the 32nd round, with the 996th selection, the Texas Rangers drafted Carmel Catholic pitcher Alex Young, who just graduated high school.
Young, who is signed with Texas Christian University, is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound left-hander.
He dominated this spring, going 7-1 with a 0.87 ERA. He struck out 71 batters in 40 innings while yielding only 13 base hits.
