Arlington Hts. American Legion sponsors Eagle Scout project

On Saturday, April 7, Prospect High School senior Christopher Petrovski completed work toward his Eagle Scout project at the American Legion Post 208, 121 N. Douglas in Arlington Heights.

Post members were pleased to sponsor this ambitious project — initially proposed last fall — which included power-washing, scraping and repainting three sides of the building’s exterior, along with cleaning and staining the long wooden fence.

When the early spring weather arrived, Petrovski enlisted the help of his fellow scouts from Scout Troop 132, along with family and friends, to complete the building upgrades over two consecutive Saturdays. As project coordinator, Petrovski was required to secure all the necessary tools, materials and refreshments for the two days and ensure that all aspects of the work were done correctly and on time. To fund the project, he received $100 from his troop and earned an additional $180 last October doing fall cleanup work.

Post 208 Commander Ellen Janda had high praise for Christopher and his volunteers.

“I am amazed at how a young man can do such a big project so well from start to finish,” Janda said. “He has really enhanced the image of our Post building in the community.”

There is a family connection to Post 208 as both Petrovski’s father and grandfather, John and Charles Petrovski, are current members. John Petrovski is also a former Scout Master and currently the Assistant Scout Master for the 35 members of Troop 132 that is sponsored by the First United Methodist Church in Arlington Heights.

When asked about the next step in the project, Christopher said he must complete a written report before he turned 18 on May 22, and, if it is approved by his Eagle Scout adviser, he will be recognized as an Eagle Scout at a formal ceremony held later this year. While Petrovski said he was initially hesitant to pursue the Eagle Scout designation, he takes pride in knowing he will be the first in his family to earn scouting’s highest honor. As for the future, Petrovski plans to attend Marquette University this fall and is considering a degree in mechanical engineering.
