Boomers beaten by Southern Illinois
MARION, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers dropped the opener of a three-game weekend set 7-2 at Southern Illinois on Friday night.
The Miners collected 3 straight hits with one out in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Chad Maddox drove home his league-best 18th run of the year with a triple and scored on Matt Fields’ double.
In the third, the Boomers’ Andrew Cohn singled, stole second and scored with two outs when Nick Kuroczko extended his hitting streak to seven games with an RBI single. The Boomers added a run in the ninth when Chad Mozingo singled, Nate Baumann reached on an error and Sean Mahley and Cohn walked. Frank Pfister and Mozingo both had 2 hits for the Boomers (8-5).
The Miners tacked on 4 runs in the third against starter Tyler Watkins. Fields blasted his league-leading sixth homer, a 2-run shot with one out, and the Boomers allowed 2 unearned runs. Watkins allowed 6 runs, 4 earned, with 3 strikeouts and a walk in 6 innings.
