Find a new name for same-sex unions

I have never before submitted comments to a newspaper editor, but I am compelled to do so regarding the ongoing controversy of same-sex “marriage.”

Most American people would like to see equal treatment for two people in love wishing to join together in a public union — whether they be a gay couple or a man and a woman.

Should the same-sex couple have the “right” to have their union called “marriage”? No, absolutely not. Most would agree the partners should have the right to the same benefits and entitlements as any other couple after their union, but it should not be officially recognized as a “marriage.”

The Bible specifically defines marriage as “a union between a man and a woman.” Christians are appalled that marriage is not being honored and respected as such. And rightly so. A simple solution for both sides of the controversy would be for the same-sex union to be officially recognized by another name.

Homosexuals may personally announce to their friends and family their intention to “marry” and invite others to the celebration and union. But the official state certificate would be scripted with another name. For instance, suggested wording could be: Nuptial Partnership, Nuptial Declaration, Partnership Union, Celebration of Nuptial Vows, Certificate of Patrimony, etc.

Whatever appropriate name is chosen and agreed upon would satisfy both sides of this troubling controversy. President Obama needs to wake up and start the ball rolling in a positive direction for all.
