Lung Associations Fight For Air Ride from Crystal Lake to Lake Geneva
CRYSTAL LAKE, IL (May 31, 2012) – On June 8-10, nearly 100 participants will travel round trip from Crystal Lake to Lake Geneva, Wis., as part of the American Lung Association in Greater Chicago's Fight For Air Ride – Lake Tour Bike Trek.
Starting at McHenry County College, cyclists will ride 50 miles per day, 150 miles total, to support the Association's fight for healthy lungs and healthy air.
“Our participants range from avid cyclists to beginning riders,” explains Meghan Miller, executive director of the American Lung Association in Greater Chicago. “They ride as a great physical challenge or in honor or memory of a loved one. We even have participants who have been to all 27 events!”
Cyclists range in age from 8-75 years old and may participate as individuals or as part of a team. Cyclists' personal connections to lung disease not only build a sense of community within the event, but also compel riders to come back year after year.
Each cyclist fundraises over $450 to be eligible to participate and the event raised over $100,000 last year toward the Fight for Air. Many participants set monetary goals above the minimum requirement, driven by their personal mission to join the Ride.
“From a young age, almost a third of my students are forced to cope with asthma by doing everything from taking daily medications to limiting physical activity and sometimes even missing school,” says cyclist Amanda Zimney. “I'm riding in support of the American Lung Association so everyone can live healthier with cleaner air.”
Participants will travel a different scenic route each day and Friday and Saturday's routes finish at The Abbey Resort and Spa in Lake Geneva, Wis.
Between ridings, they will enjoy The Abbey's amenities with indoor and outdoor pools, beach access, golf, a beautiful marina, and spa packages.
