U.S. shouldn’t deny right to be married

In more than 130 comments to the story “Obama voices his support for gay marriage,” I have read about how great this is and how bad it is, the effect on the election, how President Obama is a communist, gay slurs, and how Obama is trumping the Constitution. As a heterosexual male, what I don’t understand is why this is such a big deal?

I grew up reading a history of the United States, which portrays an America with equal rights and individual rights for all its citizens. Denying the right for two people who love each other and want to be with each other for the rest of their lives to be recognized by their government as a union no matter their sex has always struck me as strange, as their union has no effect on the rest of us in society at the end of the day.
