Stevenson falls; VH rolls

At Niles North, seniors Lara Horwitz, Ali Castriano and Nicole Alesi all doubled and fellow senior Cailin Rubenstein singled for Stevenson but the Patriots dropped an 11-3 decision to the hosts in a Class 4A regional-opening loss Wednesday.

Sam Feder pitched the complete game for Stevenson, striking out seven.

“The seniors did an awesome job this season,” Stevenson coach Larry Friedrichs said. “They worked hard each day. All the kids were fighting to the end. That’s all I can ask. If they do that in real life, they’ll be fine.”

Vernon Hills 7, Crystal Lake Central 0: At Wauconda, Megan Meline led the second-seeded Cougars, pitching the shutout and striking out six. She also excelled offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double and solo home run.

Tori Smith went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles, Caitlin Sernett homered and had 2 RBI, and Carly Alm had 1 hit and 2 RBI.

Vernon Hills (23-12) advanced the regional final against top-seeded Prairie Ridge at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Wauconda.
