Dist. 15 Special Olympics athletes bring home the gold

The Blue Jays, District 15's Special Olympics team, amassed an impressive tally of medals over the course of the school year.

SNOWSHOEING

This winter, Justin Roach, an eighth grader at Walter R. Sundling Junior High, advanced to compete at the State Winter Games after winning a gold medal in snowshoeing at the district tournament.

BASKETBALL

Also this winter, Nicholas Austin, a fifth grader at Marion Jordan School, and Grace Hsieh, a seventh grader at Plum Grove Junior High, both advanced to compete at the state basketball tournament after winning gold medals in individual basketball skills at the district tournament.

SOCCER

This spring, members of the Blue Jays soccer team advanced to compete in the State Summer Games after winning the gold medal at the district tournament. Members of the team are:

• Grace Hsieh, Grade 7, Plum Grove Junior High

• Nathan Blume, Grade 7, Plum Grove Junior High

• Brian Caro, Grade 4, Thomas Jefferson School

• Ashley Costigan, Grade 5, Hunting Ridge School

• Jack Dawson, Grade 7, Walter R Sundling Junior High

• Jovan Erickson, Grade 6, Marion Jordan School

• Nate Hollenbeck, Grade 6, Stuart R Paddock School

• Jack McGinn, Grade 4, Thomas Jefferson School

• Jericho Moy, Grade 5, Marion Jordan School

• Haley Scott, Grade 4, Stuart R. Paddock School

• Patrick Woodfork, Grade 3, Thomas Jefferson School

Additionally, Cailean Walker, a second grader at Winston Campus Elementary, and Noor Gewargis, a third grader at Marion Jordan School, advanced to compete at the State Summer Games by winning gold medals in individual soccer skills at the district tournament.

TRACK & FIELD

Also this spring, Blue Jays track & field team members advanced to compete in the State Summer Games after winning gold medals in the following events:

• 50-Meter Run

o Sierra Hanson, Grade 1, Lincoln School

o Michael Maniola, Grade 7, Walter R. Sundling Junior High

• Softball Throw

o Michael Maniola, Grade 7, Walter R. Sundling Junior High

o Patrick Woodfork, Grade 3, Thomas Jefferson School

• Tennis Ball Throw

o Nicole Bischoff, Grade 2, Kimball Hill School

• Standing Long Jump

o Jack Dawson, Grade 7, Walter R. Sundling Junior High

o Malik Bradley-Henderson, Grade 6, Marion Jordan School
