Hoffman, Schaumburg Memorial Day observance May 28

Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the American military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.

The public is invited to attend a Memorial Day Observance in Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg. The Hoffman Estates Memorial Ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 28, at the Hoffman Estates Veterans Memorial site, at 411 W. Higgins Road. Immediately following that event, the observance will move to Schaumburg and continue at 10:45 a.m. at St. Peter Church and School, 202 E. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg.

Village President Al Larson and Hoffman Estates Mayor William McLeod will be speaking at the Memorial Day Observance. The guest speaker will be Colonel Jack Bishop, retired U.S. Army. Other event participants include: the Spring Valley Concert Band; the Legends; honor guards from the Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates public safety departments; American Legion Post 1983 and VFW Post 2202; the American Sikh Community; and volunteers from the various Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates philanthropic organizations. A floral tribute, rifle salute and the playing of taps will be conducted by the various military posts and volunteers.

Following the observance, hot dogs and other refreshments will be served at the picnic grove at St. Peter. Please bring along lawn chairs for seating.

Chuck Linkenheld of the American Legion Post 1983, Tom Alderson of VFW Post 2202, and John Selke of the Rotary, are the 2012 Memorial Day planning committee co-chairs.
