Weed control mishap at Addison parks

Neighborhood parks to receive new grass

The Addison Park District has been diligently preparing the parks for summer so that community members and visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. As many homeowners know, proper lawn care includes spraying for weeds early in the season to reduce weed growth throughout the summer months.

Unfortunately for the Park District, there was a mishap in weed control which has affected a few community parks.

The Park District routinely purchases and applies weed killer to maintain the parks. A new product was applied in three parks: Community Park, Centennial Park and Old Mill Park. Park District staff noticed that once this new herbicide was applied, not only did the weeds die, unfortunately the grass did too. Upon investigation into the problem, the Park District learned that the supplier inadvertently sold the Park District the wrong brand of herbicide. The supplier has admitted to their error and has agreed to remedy the situation at no cost to the Park District or its taxpayers. Reseeding of 98 acres in the affected parks will take place over the next few weeks in an effort to repair the damage at the contractor's expense.

Addison Park District staff is aware of the issue and deeply concerned about the situation. The parks will remain open for use during the summer. The Park District remains committed to providing the highest quality recreational opportunities and open space for everyone.

The 2012 Summer Brochure was delivered to the homes of Addison residents on Friday, April 20.
